Hot Potato Game

Level 3 promotes critical thinking and structured analysis. 'Hot Potato Game' strengthens global literacy and respectful cultural awareness.

Objectives

Instructions

Materials

- One soft, lightweight ball or a beanbag.

- A portable music player or smartphone with a speaker.

- A collection of world music tracks representing different countries.

- Masking tape to mark a large circle on the floor.

- A globe or world map for the introductory discussion.

Learning Objectives

- Demonstrate spatial awareness by maintaining a consistent circle formation.

- Practise impulse control by stopping movement immediately when the music pauses.

- Exhibit turn-taking and cooperative play within a structured group setting.

- Identify at least two different countries or regions through the music played.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Gather the children in the circle marked by the tape and show them the globe to discuss the theme of travelling around the world.

2. Explain that the ball represents a traveler moving from country to country.

3. Model the proper way to pass the ball to the person on the right, emphasizing gentle tosses or hand-to-hand transfers.

4. Start the music and instruct the children to pass the ball quickly but safely around the circle.

5. Stop the music abruptly at random intervals to simulate the traveler arriving at a destination.

6. The child holding the ball when the music stops must name the continent or country currently playing on the audio track.

7. Encourage the group to cheer for the child holding the ball to foster a supportive classroom environment.

8. Resume the music after the brief identification period to continue the game.

9. Observe the children to ensure they are passing the ball rather than holding onto it for too long.

10. Conclude the activity by discussing how it felt to cooperate as a group to keep the traveler moving.

Educator Tip

If the group struggles with the pace, use a slower tempo for the music to help children focus on their motor coordination. To increase the challenge, add a second ball to the circle, requiring children to track two moving objects simultaneously.

Assessment

- Observe if the child can pass the object without dropping it or stopping the flow of the game.

- Note whether the child waits for the music to stop before attempting to identify the location.

- Record if the child demonstrates patience and positive social interaction while waiting for their turn.

Assessment

Assess against Early Learning Goals (ELGs). Document evidence of 'expected' or 'exceeding' descriptors. Note: independent application of skills, ability to explain reasoning, and capacity to build on prior learning. Rubric: reasoning, accuracy, clarity, independence.
