Sorting for Takeoff
Sorting activities build foundational mathematical thinking and classification skills while reinforcing the air travel theme through engaging manipulatives.
- Framework: EYFS
- Unit: EYFS Air Travel
- Learning area: Numeracy
- Level: EYFS 3-4, Reception
Objectives
- Sort objects into groups by quantity
- Develop classification skills
- Practise one-to-one correspondence
Materials
- Airplane counters
- Sorting trays
- Number cards
Instructions
Gather children at a table with airplane-shaped counters and sorting trays. Demonstrate how to sort the counters into groups, using verbal cues and modelling.
Educator tip
Use airplane sounds ('Zoom!') as children complete each sorting task to maintain engagement and celebrate success.
Assessment
Observe and note: ability to follow two-step instructions, use of new vocabulary in context, early problem-solving strategies, and sustained shared thinking episodes. Assess against Development Matters age-band expectations. Observe accuracy in sorting and ability to verbalize quantities at the appropriate developmental level.
