Passport Counting

Matching objects to numerals reinforces number sense and prepares children for addition and subtraction concepts.

Objectives

• Demonstrate one-to-one correspondence

Materials

• Bear counters
• Wooden blocks
• Passport booklets (teacher-made)

Instructions

Create passport booklets with numbered pages. Children place the corresponding number of counters on each page.

Educator tip

Create a pretend airport check-in desk where children present their completed passports for 'approval' before moving to the next activity.

Assessment

Observe and note: ability to follow two-step instructions, use of new vocabulary in context, early problem-solving strategies, and sustained shared thinking episodes. Assess against Development Matters age-band expectations. Evaluate accuracy of one-to-one correspondence and recognition of numerals at appropriate developmental level.
