Macaroni Flight Patterns
Pattern recognition develops mathematical thinking and prepares children for algebraic concepts.
- Framework: EYFS
- Unit: EYFS Air Travel
- Learning area: Numeracy
- Level: EYFS 3-4, Reception
Objectives
- Recognise and create patterns
- Identify duplicates in sequences
- Extend patterns independently
Materials
- Coloured macaroni
- Paper plates
- Paper and glue
Instructions
Provide coloured macaroni for children to recognise and create patterns, relating them to flight paths across the sky.
Educator tip
Display completed patterns as 'flight paths' on a bulletin board to celebrate children's work.
Assessment
Observe and note: ability to follow two-step instructions, use of new vocabulary in context, early problem-solving strategies, and sustained shared thinking episodes. Assess against Development Matters age-band expectations. Observe pattern recognition, creation accuracy, and ability to extend patterns.
