Going Out — Independent Research Project

Going Out is the elementary child's ritual of independence. They leave the classroom for real-world research — not a field trip, but a self-directed expedition. The project crystallizes every skill: writing, speaking, planning, civility.

Objectives

Materials

Instructions

1. Invite the child to choose a topic of genuine passion. 2. Fill out a planning worksheet: what question, who might know, where to go. 3. Identify an expert to contact: a librarian, a curator, a tradesperson, a professor. 4. Draft a polite request for an interview or visit. 5. Send the request with adult support. 6. On the day of the Going Out, travel to the expert or location. 7. Conduct the interview, take notes, collect artifacts. 8. Return and synthesize findings. 9. Present to the class with visuals.

Educator tip

Going Out is a cultural ritual, not a logistical task. Celebrate every part: the request letter, the thank-you note, the presentation.

Assessment

Note depth of engagement, quality of research, and growth in civic confidence.
