Peace Rose — Conflict Resolution

The peace rose gives young children a ritual for handling the most difficult social work: disagreement. Holding the rose means: I am speaking. The other child listens until it is their turn. A misuse of the rose is immediately obvious. Indirect aim: emotional regulation and peaceful community.

Objectives

Materials

Instructions

1. Show the children the peace rose and its location. 2. Explain: 'When two of us have a problem, we use the peace rose.' 3. Demonstrate with a colleague: sit facing each other on the peace mat. 4. One child picks up the rose and describes the problem. 5. Hand the rose to the other child, who speaks next. 6. Pass the rose back and forth until a solution emerges. 7. When agreed, say together: 'We have found peace.' 8. Return the rose to its place. 9. Invite children to use it whenever needed.

Educator tip

Model the peace rose in low-stakes situations first — between two teachers, between a teacher and a puppet. Children internalize the pattern by seeing.

Assessment

Observe whether children use the rose spontaneously, respect turn-taking, and reach solutions without adult mediation.
