Five Kingdoms of Life — Classification Chart
The first great sorting of life: five kingdoms. The child sees that bacteria and elephants are both alive but wildly different. Misclassifications are caught by checking against the chart — a mushroom isn't a plant; a coral isn't a plant.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Cultural Studies
- Learning area: Zoology Classification
- Level: Ages 4-6
Objectives
- Introduce the five kingdoms: Monera, Protista, Fungi, Plantae, Animalia
- Match organisms to their kingdoms
- Understand that classification organizes the living world
- Prepare for deeper phylum and class study
Materials
- Five Kingdoms chart with illustrations
- Picture cards of representative organisms (bacteria, paramecium, mushroom, oak, eagle)
- Three-part nomenclature cards
Instructions
1. Introduce the Five Kingdoms chart. 2. Name each: Monera (bacteria), Protista (single-celled eukaryotes), Fungi (mushrooms, molds), Plantae (plants), Animalia (animals). 3. Show representative picture cards. 4. Discuss key differences (cells, feeding, mobility). 5. Sort cards by kingdom. 6. Use a three-period lesson for the names. 7. Hunt for organisms in each kingdom at home. 8. Add real specimens: a leaf, a piece of bread mold (sealed). 9. Record classifications in a science journal.
Educator tip
Mushrooms trip everyone up — they look like plants but are fungi. The moment of surprise is the lesson.
Assessment
Note correct classification of organisms and understanding of key kingdom differences.
