The Black Strip — Timeline of the Universe

The Black Strip is humbling. The child walks its length and the universe's vastness becomes felt, not abstract. Human history — everything in every history book — fits in a strip the width of a finger. No amount of telling conveys this. Walking does.

Objectives

Materials

Instructions

1. Take the children outside or to a long hallway. 2. Unroll the Black Strip fully. 3. Walk together from the start: the Big Bang. 4. Stop at intervals to mark major events (formation of galaxies, Earth, first life, dinosaurs, mammals). 5. Continue walking until the far end. 6. Show the tiny marker at the very end: all of human history. 7. Let children stand at the Big Bang and at human history to feel the distance. 8. Roll the strip back up. 9. Discuss what the walk revealed.

Educator tip

Do this outside in a park or playground. The scale needs space. Photograph the walk for the classroom.

Assessment

Observe the child's reactions, questions, and subsequent research into cosmic history.
