Montessori Bells — Pitch Matching
The bells train the musical ear in the sensitive period for pitch perception. The child matches, grades, and later names notes. Out-of-pitch pairs sound wrong to the developing ear, guiding self-correction.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Sensorial
- Learning area: Auditory Sense
- Level: Ages 5-6
Objectives
- Match pairs of bells by pitch across a diatonic scale
- Grade bells from lowest to highest pitch
- Acquire the musical terms for notes
- Prepare for reading music and singing
Materials
- Set of Montessori bells: two octaves of matching pairs (white pairs as reference, brown pairs to match)
- Wooden striker
- Small felt damper
Instructions
1. Place the white reference bells in order on their stand. 2. Place the brown bells in random order on a second stand. 3. Strike the first white bell with the striker and listen. 4. Strike each brown bell in turn until the matching pitch is found. 5. Place the brown bell beside the white bell. 6. Damp each bell after striking. 7. Continue until all pairs are matched. 8. Grade the brown bells alone into a scale. 9. Introduce the note names (do re mi or C D E) with a three-period lesson.
Educator tip
Strike each bell softly and damp between strikes; overlap of two pitches confuses the ear. Move to scales and simple songs as the child progresses.
Assessment
Note matching accuracy on adjacent pitches and ease of grading into the full scale.
