Knobless Cylinders
Once the child has mastered the four cylinder blocks, the knobless cylinders extend the work. Without the knob to guide placement, the eye and hand must judge the fit directly. A misplaced cylinder breaks the visual progression the child has come to expect.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Sensorial
- Learning area: Visual Dimension
- Level: Ages 4-5
Objectives
- Extend the cylinder block work to cylinders without knobs
- Grade and combine cylinders in each of four colored sets
- Build constructions combining two, three, or four sets
- Develop visual discrimination without tactile cues
Materials
- Four sets of ten knobless cylinders (red, yellow, green, blue), each set matching a cylinder block in dimension
Instructions
1. Carry one set to a rug. 2. Empty the cylinders and order them from largest to smallest. 3. Build a tower, a stair, or a horizontal sequence. 4. Verify the gradation is even. 5. Introduce a second set (a different color) and combine the two. 6. Explore designs: concentric circles, gradients, nested patterns. 7. Over many lessons, combine all four sets into complex constructions. 8. Pair with cylinder blocks to extend discrimination. 9. Return each set individually to its case.
Educator tip
Let the child invent constructions. The Knobless Cylinders are as much a creative material as a sensorial one — don't impose patterns.
Assessment
Observe precision of gradation, variety of constructions attempted, and whether the child combines sets spontaneously.
