Color Box 2 — Matching Primary and Secondary Colors
The Color Box isolates chromatic variation, supporting the sensitive period for sensory impressions. The plain wooden ends of the tablet keep the child's fingers off the color surface, so the eye alone does the work. Mismatched tablets look obviously wrong when placed side by side — the child's eye recognizes and corrects.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Sensorial
- Learning area: Chromatic Sense
- Level: Ages 3-4
Objectives
- Match pairs of color tablets across eleven common colors
- Acquire precise names for common colors
- Begin conscious perception of chromatic qualities
- Prepare for the grading of shades in Color Box 3
Materials
- Wooden box with compartments containing paired color tablets (eleven pairs)
- Small work mat
Instructions
1. Bring the box to a table with a mat. 2. Open the box and take out one tablet of each color, arranging them in a column on the left. 3. Take one of the remaining tablets and scan the column for its match. 4. Place it to the right of its pair. 5. Continue until all pairs are matched. 6. Invite the child to verify by looking across each row. 7. To introduce new names, use the three-period lesson: 'This is red. This is blue. This is yellow.' 8. Second period: 'Show me red. Where is blue?' 9. Third period: present a tablet and ask, 'What is this?'
Educator tip
Teach only colors the child does not yet know with confidence. Three per lesson is ample. Hold the tablet by its wooden ends to keep the visual impression pure.
Assessment
Note whether the child matches without hesitation and retains new names across sessions rather than only within the lesson.
