Color Box 3 — Grading Shades
By grading shades, the child moves from simple matching to true perception of degree. The work refines the eye as pitch work refines the ear. A misplaced tablet breaks the gradient, and the eye perceives the step — the child re-evaluates without adult intervention.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Sensorial
- Learning area: Chromatic Sense
- Level: Ages 4-5
Objectives
- Grade seven shades of each of nine colors from darkest to lightest
- Refine the chromatic sense to perceive subtle gradations
- Strengthen visual memory and attention to detail
- Build aesthetic vocabulary for the natural world
Materials
- Wooden box with compartments containing seven graded tablets for each of nine colors (63 tablets total)
Instructions
1. Bring the box to a table. 2. Select a single color compartment, e.g., blue. 3. Remove all seven tablets and place them in random order in front of the box. 4. Select the darkest tablet and place it at the top of the work space. 5. Select the next darkest and place it directly beneath. 6. Continue until all seven form a gradient column. 7. Invite the child to do the same with another color. 8. Later, grade two colors side by side. 9. Progress to grading all nine colors into a radiating sun or other composition.
Educator tip
Work in even natural light; artificial light distorts fine shade differences. Let the child slowly grow the number of colors they grade at once — rushing to all nine loses the precision that is the point.
Assessment
Note precision at the middle of each gradient where differences are subtlest, and observe artistic follow-up choices.
