Binomial Cube

The Binomial Cube is a sensorial expression of (a + b)³. The child absorbs the pattern through color and form long before any symbolic introduction, planting a seed that blooms into algebra during the elementary years. If colors do not match the lid or the sides will not close, the cube is incorrectly built and the child re-examines.

Objectives

Materials

Instructions

1. Open the box by releasing the two hinged sides and let them fall outward. 2. Study the pattern on the lid. 3. Select the red cube and place it where the solid red square appears on the lid. 4. Select the three red-and-black prisms and place them so the red faces are visible and match the lid pattern. 5. Continue with the black pieces. 6. Place the blue cube and its prisms, working inward. 7. Verify each visible face matches the lid. 8. Close the sides so the box seals flush. 9. Over subsequent work, build the cube outside the box using only the lid as control.

Educator tip

Do not explain the algebra in primary. The child's sensorial impression is sufficient; explanation comes years later when it illuminates what the hands already know.

Assessment

Observe whether the child uses the lid as a guide, whether they begin to work outside the box, and whether they transfer the pattern to the trinomial cube.
