Constructive Triangles

The constructive triangles reveal that the triangle is the generative figure of all polygons. The black guide lines offer a self-correcting pattern: when lines meet, the figure is correctly formed. If the black lines do not align, the polygon is incorrectly constructed and the child re-adjusts. This foundational insight nourishes the reasoning mind flowering in the elementary plane.

Objectives

Materials

Instructions

1. Select the first rectangular box. 2. Remove all triangles and arrange them in groups by color. 3. Take two triangles whose black lines match and slide them together along the marked edges to form a rectangle. 4. Repeat with each pair. 5. Name each formed figure. 6. Explore: 'Can we make a rhombus? A square?' 7. Close the box and restore. 8. Over many sessions, progress to the triangular box (revealing that any triangle can be split into two right triangles). 9. Progress to the small and large hexagonal boxes (revealing decompositions of the hexagon).

Educator tip

Introduce one box at a time, with days or weeks between. The rhythm of discovery matters more than finishing all five boxes quickly.

Assessment

Note which equivalences the child discovers spontaneously and whether they begin to generalize across boxes.
