Chemistry Cube — Atomic Structure
The atom is matter's Lego. The model makes protons, neutrons, electrons visible. Indirect aim: chemistry, preparation for bonding and quantum, appreciation of matter's structure.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Sensorial
- Learning area: Algebraic Sensorial
- Level: Ages 9-11
Objectives
- Model atomic structure: nucleus with protons/neutrons, electron shells
- Understand atomic number as protons
- Understand mass number
- Build models for first 20 elements
Materials
- Atom model kit (nucleus ball, electron orbits, proton/neutron/electron pieces)
- Periodic table
- Recording paper
Instructions
1. Build hydrogen: 1 proton in nucleus, 1 electron. 2. Build helium: 2 protons, 2 neutrons, 2 electrons. 3. Continue: lithium (3), carbon (6), oxygen (8). 4. Note electron shells fill: 2 in first, 8 in second. 5. Model sodium (11) through argon (18). 6. Compare to periodic table positions. 7. Record each atom. 8. Research what atomic number and mass number mean.
Educator tip
The atom is imaginary at our scale but real. Drawing the Bohr model after building the physical makes it memorable.
Assessment
Observe correct construction, accurate naming, and link to periodic table.
