Exponent Materials — Powers of 10
10^6 is a million — the same as the Million Cube. Each power multiplies by 10. The beads are the control — 10 unit = 1 ten. Indirect aim: scientific notation, orders of magnitude, preparation for physics and astronomy.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Sensorial
- Learning area: Algebraic Sensorial
- Level: Ages 8-10
Objectives
- Build powers of 10 physically: 10^1 through 10^6
- Connect to place value
- Understand scientific notation basics
- Apply to magnitude estimation
Materials
- Golden beads: unit, 10-bar, 100-square, 1000-cube
- Paper strip for 10,000+
- Powers of 10 chart
Instructions
1. Lay unit = 10^0 = 1. 2. 10-bar = 10^1 = 10. 3. 100-square = 10^2 = 100. 4. 1000-cube = 10^3 = 1,000. 5. Continue abstractly: 10^4 = 10,000; 10^5 = 100,000; 10^6 = 1,000,000. 6. Write scientific notation: 3 × 10^6 = 3,000,000. 7. Apply: Earth's population is ~8 × 10^9. 8. Compare orders of magnitude: bacteria to galaxies.
Educator tip
Powers of 10 anchor science notation. Use real examples: atoms, cells, continents, galaxies.
Assessment
Observe accurate building, notation, and magnitude comparison.
