Fraction Insets — Advanced Operations Sensorial
The insets make fraction arithmetic tactile. Two halves fill a whole; three quarters minus one quarter leaves two. Indirect aim: abstract fraction operations, preparation for algebraic fractions.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Sensorial
- Learning area: Algebraic Sensorial
- Level: Ages 7-9
Objectives
- Model addition and subtraction of fractions with insets
- Physically combine and remove fraction pieces
- Discover need for common denominators sensorially
- Record operations symbolically
Materials
- Full Fraction Inset set (circles divided 1-10)
- Operation strips
- Recording paper
Instructions
1. Show 1/2 + 1/4. Place 1/2 piece, then 1/4 piece. Do they fill a familiar fraction? Fill with 1/4 pieces: 2/4 + 1/4 = 3/4. 2. Record symbolically. 3. Try 3/4 - 1/2: lay 3/4, remove 2/4 (= 1/2), 1/4 remains. 4. Experiment with like and unlike. 5. Notice unlike need common denominator. 6. Move to symbolic work. 7. Verify with insets. 8. File.
Educator tip
Insets bridge concrete to abstract. Children who skip them struggle with algebraic fractions later.
Assessment
Observe physical manipulation, symbolic recording, and transition to abstract.
