Crystal Structure — Symmetry in Minerals
Minerals are structured matter. The seven crystal systems (cubic, tetragonal, etc.) reflect atomic arrangement. A cube of salt is cubic all the way down. Indirect aim: chemistry, materials science, preparation for solid-state physics.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Sensorial
- Learning area: Visual Form
- Level: Ages 9-11
Objectives
- Identify seven crystal systems
- Classify minerals by crystal shape
- Grow a crystal from solution
- Connect symmetry to atomic structure
Materials
- Mineral specimens with visible crystal structure
- Crystal system chart
- Epsom salt or sugar for growing
- Magnifying glass
Instructions
1. Introduce seven systems: cubic, tetragonal, orthorhombic, hexagonal, trigonal, monoclinic, triclinic. 2. Classify specimens: salt=cubic, quartz=hexagonal. 3. Grow crystal from Epsom salt solution — watch shape form. 4. Connect: the shape reflects atomic arrangement. 5. Study snowflakes (hexagonal water ice). 6. Research industrial uses (silicon chips use crystal structure). 7. Visit geology museum. 8. Compile a crystal library.
Educator tip
Growing crystals is slow magic. Start a culture that takes a week.
Assessment
Observe classification, crystal growth, and connection to atomic structure.
