Geometric Form — Stick Material
Sticks model structures. A triangle locks; a quadrilateral flexes. The shape is the control — rigid or not. Indirect aim: structural engineering, geometry of rigidity, preparation for architecture.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Sensorial
- Learning area: Algebraic Sensorial
- Level: Ages 7-9
Objectives
- Use wooden sticks to form polygons with specific properties
- Explore stability and rigidity
- Discover triangle as unique-shape polygon
- Apply to real-world structures
Materials
- Wooden sticks of varied lengths
- Connector pegs or fasteners
- Engineering structures photos (bridges, domes)
Instructions
1. Form a square with 4 equal sticks. Push a corner — it deforms into a rhombus. 2. Form a triangle. Push a corner — rigid. 3. Triangles are the only polygon with unique shape given sides. 4. Build a square with a diagonal — now rigid (two triangles). 5. Study bridge trusses: all triangles. 6. Study geodesic domes. 7. Build a model dome. 8. Research Buckminster Fuller.
Educator tip
The triangle's rigidity is engineering's founding insight. Show it repeatedly in real structures.
Assessment
Observe structural insight, bridge/dome understanding, and original construction.
