Brown Stair (Broad Stair)
The Brown Stair isolates size in two dimensions, complementing the Pink Tower's three-dimensional variation. The child's muscular memory encodes the gradation, and the work anticipates the geometric concept of squared numbers. A misplaced prism creates a visible break in the stair that the trailing finger catches immediately.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Sensorial
- Learning area: Visual Dimension
- Level: Ages 3-4
Objectives
- Discriminate differences in thickness (two dimensions)
- Order ten prisms from thickest to thinnest
- Refine the muscular memory of graded weights
- Prepare visually for the concept of squaring
Materials
- Set of ten brown wooden prisms, each 20 cm long, with square cross-sections from 1 cm to 10 cm
- Work rug
Instructions
1. Carry each prism individually to the rug, one hand at each end. 2. Scatter them in mixed order. 3. Sit on the child's dominant side. 4. Select the thickest prism and place it against the near edge of the rug. 5. Select the next thickest and place it directly beside and parallel to the first, edges flush. 6. Continue in descending order until all ten prisms form a broad stair. 7. Trail the fingers down the top of the stair to feel the 1 cm steps. 8. Invite the child to verify and repeat. 9. Disassemble by returning each prism individually to the shelf.
Educator tip
Carry each prism with both hands at the ends, never by the middle, to emphasize length. Keep the Brown Stair mat distinct from the Pink Tower mat until the child chooses to combine them.
Assessment
Observe whether the child places each prism flush, trails the top to verify evenness, and spontaneously tries combining with the Pink Tower.
