Baric Sense — Weight Discrimination
The baric sense — feeling weight — is under-trained. The tablets let the child rank three nearly identical blocks. The scale verifies. Indirect aim: intuitive mass sense, preparation for measurement, everyday practical skill.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Sensorial
- Learning area: Stereognostic Sense
- Level: Ages 8-9
Objectives
- Grade weight of materials by feel blindfolded
- Distinguish fine differences in mass
- Use the baric tablets in graded order
- Transfer to real-world weight estimation
Materials
- Montessori baric tablets (three wood types, graded weights)
- Blindfold
- Small scale for verification
- Varied objects for estimation
Instructions
1. Blindfold. 2. Pick up each tablet; feel the weight. 3. Grade from lightest to heaviest. 4. Remove blindfold; verify. 5. With real objects, estimate weight before weighing. 6. Track estimation accuracy. 7. Use different materials (cotton vs lead — same volume, different weight). 8. File observations.
Educator tip
The baric sense sharpens with practice. Weekly for a month and children become remarkably accurate.
Assessment
Observe grading accuracy and estimation skill.
