Using a hose teaches water management and plant care while providing sensory enjoyment and outdoor gross motor activity.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Practical Life
- Learning area: Care of Environment
- Level: Ages 4-6
Objectives
- Learn controlled water flow management
- Develop understanding of plant water needs
- Build outdoor responsibility
Materials
- Garden hose with adjustable nozzle
- Garden beds or potted plants
Instructions
1. Turn on water to low pressure. 2. Adjust nozzle to gentle spray or shower setting. 3. Water at the base of plants, not on leaves. 4. Give each plant enough to soak the soil. 5. Move slowly between plants. 6. When finished, turn off water. 7. Coil hose neatly.
Educator tip
Teach 'water the roots, not the leaves.' Low pressure prevents damage. Discuss water conservation—enough but not too much.
Assessment
Child waters garden plants at their bases with appropriate amounts.
