Offering Help to Others
Learning to offer help teaches awareness of others' needs and builds the community spirit central to Montessori education.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Practical Life
- Learning area: Grace & Courtesy
- Level: Ages 3-5
Objectives
- Develop awareness of others' needs
- Learn to offer help respectfully
- Build empathy and community
Materials
- None needed—observation and role-play
Instructions
1. Role-play: someone drops their materials. 2. Model noticing: 'I see they need help.' 3. Approach and ask: 'Would you like some help?' 4. Wait for the response. 5. If yes, help gently. 6. If no, say 'Okay, let me know if you change your mind.' 7. Practice noticing opportunities throughout the day.
Educator tip
Emphasize asking first—some children want to do things independently. 'Would you like help?' respects autonomy. Praise noticing, not just helping.
Assessment
Child notices when someone needs help and offers appropriately.
