Resolving Conflicts with a Peace Table
The Montessori peace table teaches children to resolve conflicts independently through dialogue, building lifelong conflict resolution skills.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Practical Life
- Learning area: Grace & Courtesy
- Level: Ages 3-6
Objectives
- Learn conflict resolution process
- Practice active listening
- Develop problem-solving skills
Materials
- Peace table (small table with two chairs)
- Peace rose or talking object
- Timer (optional)
Instructions
1. Both children sit at the peace table. 2. One child holds the peace rose and speaks: 'I felt when .' 3. The other child listens without interrupting. 4. Pass the rose—the other child responds. 5. Continue passing until both feel heard. 6. Together, agree on a solution. 7. Shake hands or hug.
Educator tip
Don't solve the conflict for them—guide the process. The peace rose ensures only one person speaks at a time. Stay nearby but let them lead.
Assessment
Children resolve a conflict at the peace table with a mutually agreed solution.
