Asking to Join a Group
Knowing how to ask to join a group is a critical social skill that prevents exclusion and builds positive peer relationships.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Practical Life
- Learning area: Grace & Courtesy
- Level: Ages 3-5
Objectives
- Learn appropriate ways to join play or work
- Build social skills
- Develop patience
Materials
- None needed—role-play activity
Instructions
1. Observe the group's activity first. 2. Approach calmly. 3. Make eye contact with one person. 4. Say 'May I join you?' or 'Can I play too?' 5. Wait for a response. 6. If yes, join gently without disrupting. 7. If no, say 'Okay, maybe next time' and find another activity.
Educator tip
Practice 'what to do when the answer is no' as much as 'how to ask.' Graceful acceptance is an important skill.
Assessment
Child asks to join a group appropriately and responds gracefully to the answer.
