Flower Arranging

Arranging flowers introduces the child to beauty as an active contribution rather than a decoration made by adults. The sensitive period for order and the emerging aesthetic sense are both served, and the child learns that they can make the environment more beautiful for others. A wobbling arrangement or too-tall stems are immediately visible and invite the child to self-correct.

Objectives

Instructions

1. Put on the apron and bring the tray to the work area. 2. Select a vase and place it on the doily. 3. Using the pitcher and funnel, fill the vase with water to just below the neck. 4. Choose two or three flowers. 5. For each stem, place it alongside the vase to measure, then trim the stem at an angle so the bloom rests just above the rim. 6. Place each flower in the vase, turning the vase to view the arrangement from all sides. 7. Wipe any drops with the sponge. 8. Carry the finished arrangement on its coaster to a chosen place in the room. 9. Return to clean up trimmings, empty the pitcher, dry all items, and restore the tray.

Educator tip

Keep the selection of flowers modest and beautiful rather than abundant. Rotate arrangements with the children throughout the week so the work remains meaningful rather than decorative background.

Assessment

Note the child's aesthetic choices, care with water, and willingness to place the arrangement for others to enjoy.
