Preparing a Snack: Slicing Banana

Food preparation answers the child's desire to do real work with real consequences. The sensitive period for order and refinement of movement is engaged, and the child learns that they can feed themselves and contribute to others. Uneven slices or a half-peeled banana are immediately visible, and a fallen piece lies outside the board as a self-correcting signal.

Objectives

Materials

Instructions

1. Put on the apron and wash hands. 2. Carry the tray to a designated snack table and place each item in order. 3. Pinch the top of the banana peel to start, then peel down in strips, placing peel into the compost bowl. 4. Lay the peeled banana on the cutting board. 5. Hold the banana with the non-dominant hand using a 'bridge' grip, fingers tucked safely. 6. With the dominant hand, slice steadily from one end to the other, creating even pieces. 7. Arrange slices on the plate. 8. Carry the plate to the shared snack table. 9. Return to clean the board, empty the compost, wipe the tray, rinse and dry the knife, remove the apron, and restore all items.

Educator tip

Keep the food simple and the knife appropriately dulled. Assign a tray per snack type and rotate. The child's goal is to serve, not only to cut — don't skip the step of carrying the plate to the shared table.

Assessment

Observe hand position on the knife, care for the community, and completion of the cycle including cleanup.
