Grace and Courtesy: Greeting a Visitor

Grace and courtesy lessons give the child the keys to social life during the sensitive period for social relations. Like any other practical life work, they are presented explicitly, precisely, and analytically so the child can absorb and reproduce the pattern. A missed step is felt in the awkwardness of the exchange, and children naturally seek to repeat until the pattern feels right.

Objectives

Materials

Instructions

1. Gather a small group on the line and announce: 'I am going to show you how we welcome a visitor.' 2. Invite a colleague to play the visitor. 3. Walk to meet her and stop a step away. 4. Make eye contact, smile, extend the right hand, and say clearly, 'Welcome. My name is Sofia.' 5. Release the handshake. 6. Gesture toward the room and say, 'Please come in.' 7. Walk the visitor to a chair and offer a seat. 8. Return to the group. 9. Invite children in pairs to try, one as host and one as visitor, offering only a soft cue if a child hesitates: 'What do we say first?'

Educator tip

Keep the presentation under five minutes. Practice it with a colleague beforehand so the movements are clean. Children reproduce what they see exactly, so every detail — including the smile — is the lesson.

Assessment

Observe whether children spontaneously use the greeting later with real visitors, and whether they invent polite variations with peers.
