Folding Cloths

Folding cloths isolates the control of a soft, deformable object — essential preparation for all real-life folding. The progressively complex guide lines honor the Montessori principle of isolated and then graded difficulty; a misaligned corner leaves a visible overhang along the guide line, and the child self-corrects.

Instructions

1. Carry the basket to a rug and sit on the child's dominant side. 2. Take the first cloth and smooth it flat. 3. Place the index finger of each hand on the two corners of the bottom edge. 4. Lift with both hands simultaneously. 5. Bring the bottom corners to meet the top corners exactly along the guide line. 6. With flat palms, press along the fold from the center outward. 7. Smooth the resulting rectangle. 8. Return the cloth to the left side of the rug. 9. Repeat with each successive cloth, following its own guideline, then restore them to the basket in order and return to the shelf.

Educator tip

Sew the guide lines with clear contrasting thread. Return cloths to the basket always in the correct order so the sequence from simple to complex remains visible to every child.

Assessment

Note whether the child matches corners before pressing, and whether they progress independently from the simple to the more complex folds.
