The Coordinate Plane — Plotting Points
The coordinate plane maps algebra to geometry. Every ordered pair is a unique point; every point is a unique pair. Plotting misreadings reveal themselves when the expected shape doesn't appear.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Mathematics
- Learning area: Geometry
- Level: Ages 9-10
Objectives
- Plot points on a two-dimensional coordinate plane
- Use ordered pairs (x, y) with correct sign in each quadrant
- Draw simple shapes by connecting points
- Prepare for graphing functions and algebra
Materials
- Large coordinate grid paper (x from -10 to +10, y from -10 to +10)
- Ruler
- Pencil
- Point cards with ordered pairs
Instructions
1. Introduce the grid. Origin at (0,0). x-axis horizontal, y-axis vertical. 2. Plot (3, 2): right 3, up 2. 3. Plot (-4, 5): left 4, up 5. 4. Plot (-2, -3): left 2, down 3. 5. Plot (1, -4): right 1, down 4. 6. Identify each of four quadrants. 7. Connect four points to form a quadrilateral. 8. Name the shape. 9. Compute its area.
Educator tip
Chess, Battleship, and map coordinates are all familiar to children. Connect to these before abstract math.
Assessment
Note accurate plotting, identification of quadrants, and shape construction.
