Stamp Game — Long Multiplication Extension
The Stamp Game scales down the hierarchy of the Golden Beads. Multiplication becomes 'the same problem four times, then exchange'. Indirect aim: place-value multiplication, the algorithm of long multiplication, smooth transition to the Checkerboard.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Mathematics
- Learning area: Multiplication
- Level: Ages 6-8
Objectives
- Multiply two-digit by one-digit numbers using stamps
- Record partial products and sum
- Exchange within categories (10 green units → 1 blue ten)
- Prepare for the Checkerboard and abstract multiplication
Materials
- Stamp Game set (green 1, blue 10, red 100, green 1000 stamps)
- Problem slips
- Recording paper
Instructions
1. Write the problem: 34 × 3. 2. Place three rows of 4 green and 3 blue stamps (three copies of 34). 3. Total green: 12 — exchange 10 for a blue; 2 green remain, +1 blue. 4. Total blue: 9 + 1 = 10 — exchange 10 for 1 red; 0 blue remain, 1 red. 5. Read the product: 102. 6. Record the process: 34 × 3 = 102. 7. Verify with a different method. 8. Progress to 234 × 3 with red and blue categories.
Educator tip
The Stamp Game is often a child's first sensorial encounter with exchanging in multiplication. Don't rush past the exchanges; each one is the arithmetic point.
Assessment
Observe accurate multiple-copy layout, correct exchanges, and transfer to written recording.
