Checkerboard Multiplication — Multi-Digit Products

The Checkerboard visualizes every partial product as a bead bar on its hierarchical square. Diagonal totals slide to the correct place — the geometry enforces the place-value arithmetic. Indirect aim: long multiplication abstracted, polynomial multiplication, matrix intuition.

Objectives

Materials

Instructions

1. Set up the Checkerboard; write the problem: 3,456 × 234. 2. Place multiplicand digits 6,5,4,3 in the bottom row columns units, tens, hundreds, thousands. 3. Place multiplier digits 4,3,2 on the left column rows units, tens, hundreds. 4. For each cell, multiply: put the appropriate bead bar on the hierarchical square it lands on. 5. When all cells are filled, sum diagonals — each diagonal represents one place value in the product. 6. Slide diagonal sums to the correct hierarchical square. 7. Read the final product: 808,704. 8. Verify with the abstract algorithm on paper.

Educator tip

Every child should compute one 4-digit × 3-digit problem on the Checkerboard before attempting the abstract algorithm. The colored squares make place value unforgettable.

Assessment

Observe correct bead placement, accurate diagonal summing, and successful abstraction to paper-and-pencil multiplication.
