Cubing Chain of 5 — Linear to Cube
The child moves from line to area to volume through a single material. The chain IS the cube, unfolded. Indirect aim: volume formula, cubic growth, preparation for algebraic expressions like (a+b)³.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Mathematics
- Learning area: Squaring and Cubing
- Level: Ages 7-9
Objectives
- Walk the cubing chain of 5 (125 beads)
- Fold first into five squares, then into a cube
- Verify 5 × 5 × 5 = 125
- Link linear, square, and cubic forms
Materials
- Cubing chain of 5 (125 beads)
- Five 5² squares (25 beads each)
- One 5³ cube (125 beads)
- Arrow tickets
- Felt mat
Instructions
1. Lay the full cubing chain of 5 along the mat. 2. Count: 125 beads total. 3. Identify the five repetitions of the 5-squared pattern (each is 25 beads). 4. Fold the chain into five 5²-squares. 5. Stack the five squares to form a 5³-cube. 6. Compare: the chain, five squares, and the cube — all 125 beads. 7. Record: 5 × 5 × 5 = 125 = 5³. 8. File in the math journal.
Educator tip
The fold-up-into-cube moment is as dramatic as any Montessori presentation. Take photos — the sequence is worth remembering.
Assessment
Observe accurate counting, clean folding, and recognition that chain, squares, and cube are equivalent in bead count.
