Large Bead Frame — Up to 1,000,000

The Large Bead Frame makes the immense small. A million is ten beads on a wire — sensorially graspable. The frame is the control — a miscounted bead produces a wrong total immediately. Indirect aim: place value abstraction, column arithmetic, the felt experience of magnitude.

Objectives

Materials

Instructions

1. Introduce the seven wires; name each category. 2. Form 234,567: move beads on units, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten-thousands, hundred-thousands. 3. Read across the wires and record: 234,567. 4. Add 108,234: move beads on each wire; exchange when ten accumulate. 5. Read the new total: 342,801. 6. Subtract similarly, borrowing when a wire is empty. 7. Match to written numerals with commas. 8. Solve a real-world problem: population of two cities combined.

Educator tip

The comma convention is cultural — some countries use spaces or periods. Mention this and show the convention used in the child's home country. Place value is universal; notation is local.

Assessment

Observe accurate bead movement, correct exchange, and accurate reading and writing of large numbers.
