Symmetry Exploration
Symmetry is a fundamental geometric concept that appears throughout nature and art, building visual-spatial reasoning.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Mathematics
- Learning area: Geometry
- Level: Ages 4-6
Objectives
- Understand line symmetry
- Identify symmetrical shapes
- Create symmetrical designs
Materials
- Small mirror
- Geometric shapes
- Paper and scissors
- Folding paper
- Paint for butterfly prints
Instructions
1. Fold paper in half. Cut a shape. Unfold: 'It's the same on both sides!' 2. Place mirror on line of symmetry of various shapes. 3. 'How many lines of symmetry does a square have?' (4) 4. 'How many for a circle?' (infinite) 5. Butterfly painting: fold, paint one side, press. 6. Identify symmetry in classroom objects.
Educator tip
Nature provides beautiful symmetry examples: butterflies, leaves, snowflakes. Bring these into the classroom.
Assessment
