Pattern Block Designs
Pattern blocks develop spatial reasoning and geometric vocabulary while allowing creative expression through mathematical construction.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Mathematics
- Learning area: Geometry
- Level: Ages 3-5
Objectives
- Compose larger shapes from smaller ones
- Develop spatial reasoning
- Explore geometric relationships
Materials
- Pattern blocks: hexagons, trapezoids, rhombi, triangles, squares
- Design cards
- Blank paper for free creation
Instructions
1. Explore blocks freely. 2. Present design card. 'Can you cover this shape?' 3. Discover: 2 trapezoids = 1 hexagon. 4. '3 rhombi = 1 hexagon.' 5. '6 triangles = 1 hexagon.' 6. Create own designs. 7. Record relationships discovered.
Educator tip
Ask 'How many ways can you fill the hexagon?' This promotes flexible geometric thinking.
Assessment
Child composes shapes and discovers geometric relationships between blocks.
