Spindle Boxes

Where the number rods presented number as continuous quantity, the spindle box presents number as discrete quantity. Crucially, the child meets zero as the compartment that receives no spindle — an essential step toward the decimal system. If the spindle container still has spindles or runs out early, counting has gone wrong and the child recounts.

Objectives

Materials

Instructions

1. Place the two boxes side by side to form a continuous 0-9 strip. 2. Place the spindle container beside them. 3. Point to 0 and say, 'This says zero. Zero means nothing, so we put no spindles in the zero compartment.' 4. Point to 1. 'This is one. I will count one spindle into my hand.' 5. Pick up one spindle and place it in the 1 compartment. 6. Point to 2 and count 'one, two' into the hand, then place both in the 2 compartment. 7. Continue to 9, counting each spindle aloud into the hand before placement. 8. Observe that the spindle container empties exactly when all compartments are filled. 9. Optionally tie each bundle with an elastic.

Educator tip

Linger on zero. Many children meet the concept of 'none' here for the first time as a number in its own right — give it weight.

Assessment

Observe counting accuracy, handling of zero, and whether the container empties exactly.
