Racks and Tubes: Long Division

After the checkerboard gives multiplication its geometry, Racks and Tubes gives division its landscape. The child distributes the dividend among 'divisors' — small bowls for each digit of the divisor's hierarchy — exchanges beads between hierarchies, and watches long division unfold with physical necessity. Miscounted distributions leave bowls unequal, and exchange errors leave beads at a wrong hierarchy.

Objectives

Materials

Instructions

1. Set up racks for each hierarchy of the dividend. 2. Load each rack with as many beads of its color as the dividend calls for. 3. Represent the divisor with small colored bowls, one bowl per digit of the divisor's hierarchy. 4. Begin with the highest hierarchy of the dividend. 5. Distribute beads equally among the divisor bowls. 6. Record the quotient digit on paper. 7. Exchange remaining beads downward to the next lower hierarchy. 8. Continue until all beads are distributed. 9. Read the final quotient and any remainder, with paper and material agreeing throughout.

Educator tip

Work in partnership. One child manages the racks, the other records on paper — roles swap on alternating problems. This keeps both engaged in the whole process.

Assessment

Note accuracy of distributions, handling of remainders, and growing independence from the material.
