Cards and Counters

This work integrates everything the child has learned about numbers one through ten. By placing the counters in pairs beneath each numeral, the child's eye discovers the pattern of odd and even — a small but profound first generalization about number. The box of counters ends exactly empty when the work is complete; any error leaves extras or shortage.

Objectives

Materials

Instructions

1. Lay the mat and arrange the numeral cards in order across the top. 2. Count out one counter and place it under 1. 3. Count out two counters and place them as a pair under 2. 4. Count out three counters: place two as a pair, and the third alone beneath the pair. 5. Continue to 10, always forming pairs and placing any extra beneath. 6. Observe the shape: even numbers have a flat bottom, odd numbers have a lone counter dangling beneath. 7. Introduce the names 'odd' and 'even' with a three-period lesson. 8. Separate odd and even cards into two groups as a follow-up. 9. Explore extensions with odd + odd, even + even later.

Educator tip

Let the child discover the pattern before naming it. The visual aha is the heart of the lesson — don't pre-announce the rule.

Assessment

Note whether the child forms pairs correctly and whether they generalize odd/even to new numbers.
