Checkerboard for Long Multiplication

The checkerboard turns long multiplication into a visible geometry. The multiplicand lies along the bottom, the multiplier up the right side, and each square holds a partial product. The pattern of shifting hierarchies — multiplying by ten moves a bead one square to the left — embeds place value in the child's spatial imagination. If the paper calculation disagrees with the bead layout, the child revisits both.

Objectives

Materials

Instructions

1. Lay the checkerboard with the multiplicand written along the bottom edge in place-value colors. 2. Write the multiplier along the right edge. 3. For each digit of the multiplier, multiply each digit of the multiplicand. 4. Place the resulting bead bar on the corresponding square. 5. Slide to the next row for the next digit of the multiplier. 6. Once all bead bars are placed, slide bars diagonally down to their correct place-value columns on the bottom row. 7. Exchange ten of one for one of the next. 8. Read the product across the bottom edge. 9. Record the full algorithm on paper in parallel.

Educator tip

Encourage the child to see patterns. The child who discovers why multiplying by 10 shifts everything left has discovered real mathematics — not just a procedure.

Assessment

Note whether the child can derive partial products systematically, make hierarchical exchanges, and record accurately on paper.
