Hundred Board
The Hundred Board completes the child's linear counting work. Placing every numeral from 1 to 100 reveals patterns — the ones digit repeats every row, the tens digit shifts every row. These patterns are felt before they are named.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Mathematics
- Learning area: Linear Counting
- Level: Ages 5-6
Objectives
- Place numeral tiles 1-100 in order on the hundred board
- Recognize patterns in the number sequence
- Build familiarity with multiples and sequences to 100
- Prepare for multiplication and skip counting
Materials
- Hundred board with a 10×10 grid of empty squares
- Box of loose numeral tiles 1-100
- Control chart showing the completed board
Instructions
1. Place the empty board on a rug. 2. Pour the numeral tiles onto the rug. 3. Starting with 1, find it and place it in the top-left square. 4. Find 2 and place it to the right of 1. 5. Continue across the row until 10. 6. Find 11 and begin the next row. 7. Continue until all 100 tiles are placed. 8. Verify with the control chart. 9. Notice the patterns: columns share a ones digit, rows share a tens digit.
Educator tip
Let the child work at their own pace — a full board can take multiple sessions. Celebrate patterns they discover.
