Sandpaper Numerals
As the sandpaper letters gave the child the symbols of language, the sandpaper numerals give them the symbols of number. The fingers trace, the ear hears, the eye sees — a triple impression in the muscular memory. Tracing off the numeral drops the finger onto smooth wood, self-correcting the path.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Mathematics
- Learning area: Numbers 1-10
- Level: Ages 4-5
Objectives
- Associate the numerals 0-9 with their names
- Trace each numeral in the direction of writing
- Prepare the hand for writing numerals
- Prepare for the association of quantity and symbol
Materials
- Set of sandpaper numerals 0-9, each mounted on a smooth green board
Instructions
1. Bring the box of numerals to a table. 2. Choose three that are visually distinct, e.g., 1, 3, 7. 3. First period: trace 1 with two fingers of the dominant hand in the direction of writing, saying 'one.' 4. Invite the child to trace. 5. Repeat for 3 ('three') and 7 ('seven'). 6. Second period: 'Show me three. Trace seven.' 7. Third period: present one card and ask, 'What is this?' 8. Introduce all numerals in groups of three across lessons. 9. Introduce zero last, once one through nine are known.
Educator tip
Always trace in the direction of writing. The path the finger takes on the sandpaper is the same path the pencil will take on paper.
Assessment
Note accurate tracing direction, name retention, and readiness for association with quantity.
