Multiplication Bead Bars
A multiplication bead bar of 3 taken 4 times equals 12 — and the child lays down the bars to see and count. The colors remain consistent across all Montessori materials, binding multiplication to the child's whole arithmetic world.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Mathematics
- Learning area: Multiplication
- Level: Ages 6-7
Objectives
- Understand multiplication as repeated addition
- Memorize the multiplication tables through sensorial practice
- Build the times-table chart from lived experience
- Bridge to abstract multiplication
Materials
- Bead bars from 1 to 9 in hierarchical colors (1: red, 2: green, 3: pink, 4: yellow, 5: light blue, 6: purple, 7: white, 8: brown, 9: dark blue)
- Felt mat
- Multiplication chart
Instructions
1. Decide a problem: 3 × 4. 2. Take four pink 3-bars. 3. Lay them end to end on the mat. 4. Count the beads: 3, 6, 9, 12. 5. Record '3 × 4 = 12.' 6. Try 4 × 3: four green bars, not three pink. 7. Observe: both equal 12 (commutative). 8. Systematically explore all combinations up to 9 × 9. 9. Build the multiplication chart from the child's results.
Educator tip
Let the child notice commutativity and count by the bead color (skip counting by 3s, by 4s). These patterns are the seeds of mental multiplication.
Assessment
Note systematic coverage, accuracy, and whether the child begins to skip count rather than count every bead.
