Multiplication Short and Long Chains (Squaring and Cubing)
The chains make abstract powers tangible. The 5-chain short is 5 bead bars of 5 = 25 = 5². The 5-chain long is 25 bead bars of 5 = 125 = 5³. The child lays the chain across the floor and skip counts every bead bar.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Mathematics
- Learning area: Squaring and Cubing
- Level: Ages 7-8
Objectives
- Count the short chain for each number to discover the square (n × n)
- Count the long chain to discover the cube (n × n × n)
- Skip count fluently by any number 2 through 10
- Connect geometry to arithmetic: square and cube
Materials
- Short chain set: 2² through 10² bead chains, each a length of bead bars
- Long chain set: 2³ through 10³ bead chains, longer still
- Paired square and cube wooden blocks for each number
- Number arrows for labeling multiples
Instructions
1. Bring the 5-chain short to a rug. 2. Lay it out fully. 3. Bring the 25-square block; it matches the chain's length (5 bars of 5). 4. Skip count by 5s along the chain, placing a number arrow at each multiple (5, 10, 15, 20, 25). 5. Record '5 × 5 = 25 = 5².' 6. Bring the 5-chain long. 7. Lay it out: 25 bars of 5 = 125 = 5³. 8. Skip count again. 9. Match to the 5-cube block — a cube of 5 on each side.
Educator tip
Work on the floor or a long hallway — the chains are physically long and the space matters. The 10-chain long reaches across rooms.
Assessment
Note skip counting fluency, arrow placement accuracy, and whether the child connects chain length to square/cube blocks.
