Division with Bowls and Beads
Division begins as fair sharing: 12 beads among 3 bowls is 4 each. The physical act of distribution makes the meaning unforgettable. If one bowl has fewer, the distribution was unfair — the control.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Mathematics
- Learning area: Division
- Level: Ages 6-7
Objectives
- Perform division by physically distributing beads among bowls
- Understand division as fair sharing
- Discover remainders and whole divisions
- Bridge to the stamp game and racks-and-tubes
Materials
- Box of loose golden beads
- Several small bowls
- Recording paper
Instructions
1. Decide a problem: 12 ÷ 3. 2. Count out 12 beads. 3. Set out 3 bowls. 4. Distribute beads one at a time, one to each bowl in rotation. 5. Continue until beads are exhausted. 6. Count the beads in one bowl: 4. 7. Record '12 ÷ 3 = 4.' 8. Try 13 ÷ 3: 4 each plus 1 remaining. 9. Explore many divisions, including with remainders.
Educator tip
Keep the rotation strict — one bead, next bowl. This enforces fairness and prevents error.
Assessment
Note fair distribution, recognition of remainders, and fluency across problems.
