Perimeter Exploration
Perimeter connects measurement to geometry, providing a real-world application of addition and length measurement.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Mathematics
- Learning area: Geometry
- Level: Ages 5-6
Objectives
- Understand perimeter as distance around
- Measure perimeters of shapes
- Compare perimeters
Materials
- String
- Rulers
- Geometric shapes (flat)
- Recording sheet
- Tape
Instructions
1. Present rectangle. 'How far is it around the outside?' 2. Lay string around edge. Mark and measure string. 3. 'That's the perimeter.' 4. Measure each side with ruler. Add lengths. 5. Compare string method to ruler method. 6. Find perimeters of different shapes. 7. Compare: 'Which shape has the longest perimeter?'
Educator tip
Start with string (concrete) before measuring sides (more abstract). The string method builds intuition.
Assessment
Child measures perimeters using both string and ruler methods.
