Area Introduction with Unit Squares
Covering shapes with unit squares makes area tangible—children literally see how many squares fit inside, grounding the concept before formulas.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Mathematics
- Learning area: Geometry
- Level: Ages 5-6
Objectives
- Understand area as surface coverage
- Measure area with unit squares
- Compare areas of shapes
Materials
- Unit square tiles (1cm²)
- Flat shapes to cover
- Recording sheet
- Grid paper
Instructions
1. Present rectangle. 'How many squares cover the inside?' 2. Place unit squares inside, filling completely. 3. Count squares: 'The area is 12 square units.' 4. Cover different shapes. 5. Compare: 'Which shape has the biggest area?' 6. Notice: 'This shape is 3 rows of 4. That's 12!' 7. Connect to multiplication.
Educator tip
Area = counting squares inside, perimeter = measuring around outside. Distinguish clearly to prevent confusion.
Assessment
Child measures area by covering shapes with unit squares and records results.
