Even and Odd Patterns in Addition
Discovering that even + even = even, odd + odd = even, and even + odd = odd develops generalization skills—a cornerstone of algebraic thinking.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Mathematics
- Learning area: Number Concepts
- Level: Ages 5-6
Objectives
- Discover patterns when adding odd and even numbers
- Build algebraic thinking
- Generalize mathematical rules
Materials
- Counters
- Recording chart
- Addition cards
- Pattern chart
Instructions
1. Add two even numbers: 4 + 6 = 10. 'Is 10 even or odd?' (Even) 2. Try more: 2 + 8, 6 + 4. Always even! 3. Add two odd numbers: 3 + 5 = 8. Even! 4. Try more odd + odd pairs. 5. Add even + odd: 4 + 3 = 7. Odd! 6. Create rule chart. 7. Test with larger numbers.
Educator tip
Let children discover the pattern through multiple examples before stating the rule. Discovery is more powerful than being told.
Assessment
Child states and demonstrates the patterns for adding odd and even numbers.
