Rounding to Nearest Ten
Rounding connects to estimation and mental math, teaching children to simplify numbers for quick calculations and reasonable approximations.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Mathematics
- Learning area: Number Concepts
- Level: Ages 5-6
Objectives
- Round two-digit numbers to nearest ten
- Understand rounding rules
- Apply rounding to estimation
Materials
- Number line 0-100
- Numeral cards
- Rounding decision cards
- Recording sheet
Instructions
1. Present number 37 on number line. 2. 'Which ten is 37 closest to? 30 or 40?' 3. Count: 37 is 7 away from 30 but only 3 away from 40. 4. '37 rounds to 40.' 5. Rule: 'If the units digit is 5 or more, round up.' 6. Practice with various numbers. 7. Apply: '38 + 42 is about 40 + 40 = 80.'
Educator tip
The number line makes rounding visual. Children can see which ten is closer without memorizing rules.
