Capacity and Volume Exploration
Capacity measurement connects to science (volume) and daily life (cooking), providing authentic mathematical experiences with liquids and solids.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Mathematics
- Learning area: Measurement
- Level: Ages 3-5
Objectives
- Understand capacity as 'how much it holds'
- Compare containers by capacity
- Use non-standard and standard units
Materials
- Various containers
- Water or sand
- Cups for measuring
- Funnel
- Recording sheet
Instructions
1. Present two containers. 'Which holds more?' 2. Estimate, then test: fill one, pour into the other. 3. 'The tall container holds more—it overflowed!' 4. Measure: 'This jar holds 5 cups of water.' 5. Compare several containers. 6. Order from least to most capacity.
Educator tip
Children are often surprised that a tall, narrow container holds less than a short, wide one. This challenges assumptions.
Assessment
Child compares and measures capacity using cups and records findings.
